Dear Valued Fresenius Kabi +RFID® Customer,
The following information relates to customers who use the BluesightTM system to read +RFID labels.
Fresenius Kabi applies GS1 global standards to its +RFID labels, encoding the serial number, National Drug Code (NDC), lot number, and expiration date to support interoperability across compatible systems. These standards are intended to allow label data to be accessed directly from the RFID tag without reliance on proprietary platforms.
Standardization is one of the most significant challenges faced in medication tracking and inventory management. Unified standards allow for true interoperability, and using GS1 standards that allow anyone in the supply chain to directly access the label information via an RFID scan enables interoperability across different systems. Many RFID vendors support this open access. However, instead of reading data directly from the +RFID tag, Bluesight is the exception, requiring customers to access its cloud registry to retrieve all product information before it can be utilized in the KitCheckTM system.
Earlier this year, Bluesight informed Fresenius Kabi of its intention not to renew the contract that allowed +RFID products to work within Bluesight’s KitCheck system. Because Bluesight’s KitCheck system uses a cloud registry to control access to data that is already resident on the +RFID tag, there is no current expectation that the Bluesight KitCheckTM system will continue to read Fresenius Kabi +RFID labels, even though its system is capable of reading the data and prior contractual terms state that product data already sent to the Bluesight Registry should be supported.
Customers who rely on KitCheckTM for inventory management of Fresenius Kabi +RFID-labeled products should plan for alternative approaches. Based on typical inventory levels, many customers may have a limited transition period as existing inventory is consumed.
This situation affects inventory tracking only and does not impact product quality, safety, or regulatory compliance. All Fresenius Kabi products continue to meet FDA requirements.
Your options:
- Contact Bluesight directly regarding KitCheckTM functionality (help@bluesight.com | 844-548-2432)
- Evaluate RFID solutions that support GS1-based, interoperable standards (see plusrfid.com)
- Use manual inventory processes or alternative tagging methods
Fresenius Kabi remains committed to open RFID standards that support flexibility, interoperability, and innovation across the healthcare supply chain.
Sincerely,
The Fresenius Kabi Team
